What BHI is—and is not

BHI is a coordination model. It is not psychotherapy, psychiatric treatment, or crisis coverage. Patients in crisis are directed to emergency and crisis resources.

Provider communication

The value of BHI depends on the treating provider seeing a clear picture of the patient's behavioral-health status alongside medical care. Communication formats are agreed during scoping.

Implementation, documentation, and coverage

Implementation steps, documentation standards, and reporting formats are agreed during scoping. Coverage and reimbursement vary by payer, patient, service, documentation, and applicable requirements.

BHI as described here is a coordination program. Any clinical staffing is defined and confirmed during program scoping.

What happens in a crisis?

BHI is not a crisis service. Patients are directed to emergency services or crisis lines such as 988 in the United States.
